Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry

Your smile is the first impression that others have of you, so it  makes sense that you would want it to be bright, white and healthy. Did  you know, more than 95% of all Canadian adults believe that a smile is  an important asset for social situations? Perhaps that is why so many  patients are electing cosmetic dental procedures to improve their smiles  and boost self-confidence.

Composite Tooth-Colored Fillings

Composite fillings, also known as  tooth-colored fillings, are dental restorations designed to be  inconspicuous and natural in appearance. They blend well with the teeth  and appear more natural than amalgam fillings, which are darker and more  visible.

Composite fillings can be used to fill in decayed areas of the teeth, as well as to help repair chipped or broken teeth.

Restorations/Fillings

Is  your smile missing something? Like a tooth? Restorative procedures  involve the process of restoring missing, damaged and diseased teeth  back to normal form and function. Usually structural loss is a result of  external trauma, tooth decay or cavities. Dental restoration also  refers to replacing missing tooth structures that can be eventually  supported by dental implants

There are two main types of restorations:

Direct and Indirect.

  • Direct restoration includes placing a soft or a malleable filling  into a prepared tooth and it will build up the tooth before the material  sets. A common advantage is you can have this done with only a single  appointment. The most common procedure includes fillings.
  • Indirect restoration occurs when the team formulates the  restoration outside of the mouth using a dental impression of the  prepared tooth. The most common indirect restorations consist of inlays  and onlays, crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers and implants.

When  the tooth is ready to be restored back to a suitable form and function  it requires two steps: first they must prepare the tooth for the  placement of the restoration material or materials, and secondly the  placement of the material and materials. The dentist will use special  tools to make enough space for the restorative materials; likewise they  will remove any dental decay and any part of the tooth that is  physically unsound. Temporary restoration may be performed if permanent  restorations cannot be carried out.

Preparations  may be: Intracoronal (holds restorative materials within the confines  of the structure of the crown on the tooth; and Extracoronal (serves as a  core or base to which the restorative material will be placed to bring  the tooth back into a functional or aesthetic structure. Examples of  this are crowns, inlays and dental veneers).

Enamel  is the hardest substance in the human body and it is particularly  brittle. If the enamel is unsupported, it can fracture easily.

Our  dentists and team are constantly developing their skills and attending  education courses to insure that our patients are receiving the most  up-to-date services and procedures that will work best for each  individual patient. That’s what makes us part of the Best Dental Clinics  in Toronto.

We want to make sure  your smile is just as unique as you. We want you to smile your brightest  and be proud of your smile, because you deserve it.

Teeth Whitening

We offer in-office Zoom Teeth Whitening as  well as at-home whitening with custom fit trays to complete your smile  transformation.

Did you know that  nearly 95% percent of Canadians believe that a beautiful smile is an  important social asset? Your smile is the first impression that others  have of you, so why hide it?

Cosmetic  tooth whitening from Zoom makes it possible for you to whiten your  teeth to a beautiful, natural shade of white in as little as one hour.  Zoom is an in-office professional tooth whitening treatment that  combines a proprietary whitening solution with a specialized light that  helps remove surface stains and yellowing. Because the treatment is  performed under professional supervision, the solution and treatment  time can be adjusted and customized to fit patient needs.

Veneers and Laminates

Dental veneers – also known as laminates – are used to cosmetically enhance the appearance of one or more teeth.

Veneers  are very thin, porcelain or resin shells that are customized for a  desirable color and shape. They are bonded to the surface of the teeth  to reshape broken, misshapen or irregular teeth, as well as provide a  solution for discolored teeth that do not respond to traditional  whitening treatments. Patients with veneers typically achieve a natural  tooth appearance that is well-tolerated by the gums and also resistant  to future stains.

Dental Bonding

Bonding  is a composite resin filling placed on your teeth. Composites are the  materials used for restoring decayed teeth, making cosmetic improvements  and even changing the color and reshaping of teeth. Bonding is a  versatile treatment and can be used to:

  • Size and shape of teeth
  • Amount of gum tissue displayed
  • Length of upper lip
  • Position of the upper jaw in relationship to the skull

Bonding will cover any natural  flaws by first applying a thin coating on the front surface of your  teeth to which the bonding material is applied. Bonding can be sculpted,  colored and shaped to provide the look and feel that you desire.

Next time you’re in the office ask your dentist or a member of our dental team if bonding can improve your smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry FAQs

You may be a candidate for cosmetic dentistry if your healthy  teeth have imperfections that you would prefer to be changed to enhance  the appearance of your smile. It is important to recognize that esthetic  dental treatments are not meant to alter your overall appearance, but  rather to provide a positive change that compliments the health and  natural appearance of your teeth. If you think cosmetic dentistry is  right for you, contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Due to great strides in dentistry, cosmetic, restorative and  general dentistry can overlap in a single visit. You can expect our  dentists to discuss health implications, as well as esthetics at your  appointment.

IThere are many types of cosmetic treatments available, from  in-office teeth whitening to total smile make-overs. The types of  treatments available to you will depend on your overall goals, but may  include professional whitening, tooth-colored fillings, bonding, crowns,  veneers, or dental implants.

You will receive special care instructions following your  treatment. For example, if you have your teeth whitened you should avoid  highly pigmented beverages and foods for several days to prevent  staining. On the other hand, a dental implant make-over may require a  significant amount of down time, as well as a temporary, but limited  diet.

During your visit, your gums and teeth will be anesthetized with a  local anesthetic near the site of the filling. Once the area is numb,  the decayed or damaged portion of your teeth will be removed. A series  of steps are used to ensure that the composite bonds to the tooth, and  then the composite is added to replace the missing tooth structure. The  new filling will then be shaped and polished before the procedure is  complete.

You should be able to return to normal activity and oral care  immediately after your visit. It is normal to experience cold  sensitivity following the placement of a composite filling. A quick  “zing” with ice water, ice cold pop or ice cream is normal and will  improve with time.

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure used to enhance the  appearance of the teeth and remove stains on the enamel and in the  dentin. If you long for a whiter, brighter smile, Zoom teeth whitening  could be right for you. Zoom is only available through dentists, so  contact your dentist for more information about using Zoom to get the  smile you’ve always dreamed of having..

If you and your dentist determine that you are a candidate for  Zoom teeth whitening, you will first need to schedule an appointment to  have your teeth cleaned. Once they are free of plaque and tartar, your  dentist will place protective coverings over your lips and gums. The  Zoom whitening gel will then be applied to your teeth for 15 minutes and  a light placed over it to activate the gel. This cycle may be repeated  up to four times, after which time your teeth may be lightened by as  many as 6 to 10 shades.

Dental veneers may be right for you if you are looking for an  alternative to crowns and caps. Veneers can help you if you have gaps  between your teeth or teeth that are broken, chipped, irregularly shaped  or misaligned. To find out more about whether dental veneers are right  for you, contact a cosmetic dentist to schedule a consultation.

You may need fluoride treatments if your drinking water is not  fluoridated or if you are experiencing certain symptoms, such as  receding gums. Fluoride treatments can also provide oral support and  prevent decay if you wear orthodontic braces or are taking medications  that cause dry mouth.

Before dental veneers can be placed on the  teeth, the surface of the teeth must be prepared for bonding. After  administering a local anesthetic, your dentist will buff away  approximately half a millimeter from the surface of the teeth. You’ll  then bite into a mold that will be used to form your veneers in a dental  lab. When the veneers are ready, you’ll be asked to return to have them  fitted, bonded and adjusted for shape and color.

There is no special care required for dental veneers, and normal  brushing and flossing can be resumed immediately. Because veneers are  usually placed over the course of two appointments, it is normal to  experience some sensitivity between the first and second visit when the  teeth have been reduced in preparation for bonding.
